ATOR Protocol - Update Q2 2024
Hey, friends!
The bear market is back…just kidding.
But lots of bearish takes on crypto Twitter lately.
Many people believe we have topped for the year, and also seeing people saying we are 60-70% done with this bull run.
Just understand that none of them know how it will end, so you got to think for yourself. Risk accordingly.
Today’s newsletter is a deep dive into ATOR which is a project I am an investor in.
Btw, they have a quite degen community, make sure to check them out on Twitter too:
ATOR Protocol - Update Q2 2024
Introduction
First things first. I already did an extensive deep dive into ATOR Protocol back in December 2023. The evolvement that has happened with ATOR needs a big update. Not only has the price gone up, but the tech has improved. Same can be said about partnerships and integrations with other DeFi protocols.
If you want to fresh up your memory on the basics for ATOR, check out my article from December here:
But we do need a TLDR about ATOR, so here it is:
In an age where digital privacy is increasingly under threat, ATOR Protocol emerges as a solution for trustless privacy. ATOR utilizes the power of a globally distributed relay network, incentivizing participants with ATOR tokens for their contributions in bandwidth, computing power, and services.
The ATOR network is structured to enable the anonymous integration of mainstream web services, from storage solutions to streaming, broadening the scope and functionality of online services. ATOR is utilising peer reviewed and industry standard technology, that is Open Source and audited on a global scale via Tor fork.
In its quest for unparalleled privacy, ATOR is building more than just a network; it's creating the largest DePin anonymity network. This foundational middleware layer offers privacy to all applications built upon it. Additionally, ATOR is committed to utilizing energy-efficient hardware, aligning with the need for sustainable technological solutions. This way, ATOR is creating a globally distributed network of anonymous routing.
What is the difference between Tor and ATOR?
The contrast between TOR and ATOR lies in their decentralization strategies. Tor operates on the basis of volunteer-operated relays, whereas ATOR implements a token-driven incentive model to expand participation and decentralization.
Through rewarding users with ATOR tokens for relay operation and network contribution, ATOR endeavors to decentralize control and ownership across a wider and more varied user base.
This decentralized model bolsters resilience, diminishes dependence on centralized entities, and cultivates a more encompassing and fortified network structure, potentially heightening security and privacy levels for all users.
ATOR boasts its own onion routing network, completely independent of Tor. In a remarkable feat, ATOR deployed 2000 nodes within just 3 months on the test net, whereas Tor achieved only 6000 nodes over a span of 10 years. Since the Tor fork, the ATOR community has already spun up over 600 relay nodes, in a matter of weeks, without even rewards going live or mass distribution of hardware.
This rapid expansion showcases ATOR's commitment to scalability and innovation in the realm of decentralized networks. By harnessing cutting-edge technology and a token-driven incentive model, ATOR sets new standards in digital privacy and network resilience, offering users a robust and secure platform for anonymous communication and data protection.
Shortly summarized:
Tor relies on volunteer-operated relays, while ATOR employs a token-driven incentive model for decentralization.
ATOR rewards users with tokens for relay operation and network contribution.
ATOR aims to decentralize control and ownership across a broader user base.
Enhances resilience and reduces dependence on centralized entities
Cultivates a more robust network structure, potentially elevating security and privacy for all users.
What are ATOR relays?
ATOR relays are nodes within the ATOR network that facilitate the routing of internet traffic anonymously. These relays play a crucial role in ensuring the privacy and security of users by obscuring their online activities.
By encrypting and forwarding data through a series of nodes, ATOR relays make it difficult for adversaries to trace the origin of the traffic, thereby enhancing anonymity. Users who operate ATOR relays are rewarded with ATOR tokens, incentivizing their participation in maintaining the network's integrity and resilience.
The operating costs of a physical relay in the ATOR network are approximately $26 annually, with an initial hardware investment of $250.
However, the introduction of ATOR devices, known for their low energy consumption, offers a promising return on investment. Relay rewards can potentially reach up to $1500 USD per relay in the first year, making it a financially attractive opportunity for participants.
Here you can check how much you can potentially earn from running relays on your own: Relay Calculator
As per the ATOR roadmap, there will be functionality also to turn the relay node into a router to protect all your network traffic, not just the end device. Tor currently only supports a web browser which means the rest of the network and on HTTP/HTTPS is exposed.
All right, we have talked about the tech in my last issue and at the start of this post.

How does ATOR work?
The ATOR token is underpinned by a solid technical foundation on the blockchain, guaranteeing transparency, security, and fairness. It utilizes a Proof-of-Uptime mechanism to reward participants for their active and valuable contributions to the network. This self-regulating system ensures that rewards are fairly allocated to those who truly contribute to the network's stability and growth.
ATOR's network uses a unique combination of anonymous routing, decentralized directory authorities, private service connections, user-friendly hardware, and incentivized participation to create a secure and private online environment. This setup not only enhances privacy but also encourages community involvement and fair governance. Let's drill deeper down into each of these features to understand how ATOR works.
Anonymous routing:
Think of anonymous routing like sending a letter through several mailboxes before it reaches the final destination. In ATOR's network, this is done using a method called onion routing. Your online data (like the letter) is encrypted multiple times and sent through at least three different points in the network. Each point (or mailbox) removes one layer of encryption but doesn't know the final destination of the data. This way, your online activity remains private, as no single point can trace both where the data came from and where it's going.
Directory authorities:
Directory authorities in ATOR's network are like community-elected leaders who help manage the network. They're responsible for measuring and validating the performance of each relay (or point in the network). But unlike traditional systems where these leaders have all the control, ATOR uses a decentralized system. These authorities have to stake ATOR tokens to participate, making them more accountable. Their decisions are based on collective agreement, not individual power.
Hardware:
ATOR uses a special kind of hardware (like a mini-computer) called the ATOR relay. This device is designed to be user-friendly and allows people to participate in the network by routing data. This is a low-power, autonomous computing device built to run as a node in their anonymous network. It sends out signals to communicate its status and can be managed easily, even by those without technical expertise. This makes it simple to use for retail. It is worth adding that this hardware is currently going through a rigorous QA process consisting of a group of highly experienced engineers, built up of hardware experts, pen testers, software engineers, network/sys admins, etc
Relays in the ATOR network are rewarded for their work in helping data travel securely and anonymously. They receive ATOR tokens based on how much bandwidth they provide to the network. This system uses Arweave metrics to track each relay's contribution and ensures fair distribution of rewards without any transaction costs. Arweave is a unique kind of storage system that lets users and developers keep their data forever. This storage serves as an immutable source of truth. It is used to record and verify various activities and transactions within the ATOR network. All collected data is public and verifiable by all users.

The privacy + Depin narrative as a fuel in the 2024/2025 bullrun
As the world becomes increasingly digital and interconnected, and as concerns over data privacy grow, technologies that can provide secure, private transactions are likely to see increased adoption and valuation.
Anonymizing networks, such as the one ATOR is developing, are crucial in addressing these privacy concerns within blockchain ecosystems. By using techniques like onion routing, these networks can obscure the details of the parties involved in a transaction while maintaining the integrity and transparency of the transaction itself. This approach provides a balance between the need for transparency in blockchain transactions and the need for privacy in personal and business dealings. DePIN hardware can run as ATOR relay nodes and also that down the line, DePIN hardware and ecosystems can use ATOR as a standard protocol for communication
Privacy-focused projects are likely to attract substantial investor interest, as they address a critical and growing market need. This interest can drive the prices of privacy coins and tokens associated with privacy-centric platforms.
What’s the value and potential of the ATOR token?
Let’s look at some different angles for the value and potential of the ATOR token.
Helium's $HNT token achieved a remarkable feat, reaching a $5 billion market cap and boasting 1 million physical nodes within just one year. This remarkable accomplishment underscores the immense potential and rapid growth within the decentralized space, further highlighting the transformative impact decentralized networks can have on the digital realm.
Token Appreciation Dynamics:
As demand for ATOR tokens increases and circulation decreases due to locking from virtual nodes, the potential for price surges emerges as a significant factor. This scenario underscores the value proposition of ATOR tokens, reflecting their integral role in decentralized network participation and utility.
VPN Market Potential:
Firmly entrenched in the digital landscape, VPNs enjoy significant market dominance, addressing diverse user needs for online privacy and security. Projected to reach a global market size of $8 billion in 2024, the VPN sector continues its trajectory of steady growth.
ATOR's Ambitious Expansion:
In a notable strategic move, the ATOR network places primary emphasis on physical relay nodes while also integrating virtual relay nodes as an additional and complementary component.
This comprehensive approach includes strategic token-locking mechanisms primarily for virtual relay nodes. Reflecting ATOR's dedication to scalability and resilience, this strategy aims to reshape decentralized networks with forward-thinking innovation.
For reference, the price of $ATOR is currently: $2.50
Here is what the market cap and price would be in different scenarios:
