Zerion - The Best Wallet for Web3 Citizens
Despite their importance to the whole ecosystem, existing web3 wallets are surprisingly basic and lack portfolio tracking or native bridge and swap functionality.
Most wallets make it painful to operate in an increasingly multichain ecosystem and offer little to help keep users’ funds safe.
Luckily this is something the web3 wallet Zerion is solving.
Today is a sponsored deep dive on Zerion which has more than 60,000 Zerion wallets holding +$100 million combined.
A lot of users are today introduced to Metamask as their first wallet (tbh, I was too). But Metamask is very basic and lacks a lot of functionality. Especially after the news about Metamask/ ConsenSys storing users' IP and wallet addresses, it’s more important than ever for users to treat their wallets as more than an afterthought.
This is something Zerion has taken seriously and has the ambitious goal to become the best wallet for web3 citizens- the most active and enthusiastic crypto users.
Before we deep dive into Zerion, I recommend you to just download the Zerion app right now on your phone, because reading what’s coming next would make much more sense + you can mint your Zerion DNA NFT for free (exclusive for subscribers of this newsletter).
To mint your Zerion DNA and to try the Zerion wallet, download the mobile app on iOS or Android and simply create a new wallet.
Zerion- The Best Wallet for Web3 Citizens
Your wallet is the gateway to your on-chain identity and sits at the heart of web3.
Unfortunately, wallet management has consistently been the most painful aspect of onboarding users into this brave new world.
It’s time to get yourself a smart wallet.
Let’s face it, crypto users need better wallets that are built to scale alongside the warp-speed innovation happening in web3.
Zerion is a wallet built for web3 that enables users to manage their entire NFT and DeFi portfolios from a smartphone.
Unlike other wallets, Zerion puts user experience at the heart of their app, creating a more dynamic place to explore Web3. The built-in DeFi portfolio tracker automatically monitors all DeFi positions, rewards, and debts and neatly organizes NFTs into collections, including them in the total value of the portfolio.
Another helpful feature that makes token exchange smoother and faster is effortless switching between L1 and L2 networks. The wallet allows users to easily swap any token directly in the mobile app.
Zerion recently integrated a dApp browser into their wallet which allows users to access their favorite DAOs, NFT collections, DeFi protocols directly from their phones. This means that users can now claim NFT drops, vote with governance tokens and provide liquidity right from their wallets.
Under the hood, Zerion is also an "aggregator of DEX aggregators". The built-in Swap feature scans prices from 0x, 1inch, Uniswap, and all the main DEXes to suggest the best swap option that also takes slippage and gas fees into consideration.
Every single implosion in crypto this year has resulted from centralized services, not decentralized ones. A lot of key players in the space got trapped because they trusted FTX. After all, it should be the safest centralized exchange, right?
This could have been solved by having your crypto on a decentralized wallet. While they’re not perfect, Web3 wallets have improved a lot in recent years. However, there are still some problems with the existing Web3 wallets today.
The problems with existing web3 wallets
Web3 is a diverse and overwhelming space and it’s hard to track everything in one place. This problem only compounds as use cases continue to get more advanced and complex.
With people’s crypto footprint spread across many wallets/ dApps / chains, most people have a convoluted web of tools and methods for living in web3.
User's portfolio is spread across many wallets/ dApps
Let's be honest. How many wallets do you have? Personally, I have Metamask, XDEFI, Phantom, Zerion, TrustWallet, Rainbow, Ledger ++.
This makes it quite messy to keep track of everything you own. And not only do we have several wallets, but we also have several networks within each wallet (think Ethereum, Avalanche, Polygon, etc.). And on top of that, several Eth addresses, several Avalanche addresses, several…you get the point. Today I have over 30 different addresses, which makes it quite hard to get a full overview, especially on mobile.
DeFi deposits and debts don’t show up in legacy wallets like MetaMask
In Metamask you can only see which tokens you hold and their value of them. If you'd like to see your DeFi positions you have to use Debank, Zapper, or simply use the Zerion wallet.
NFTs
First of all, in most wallets (including Metamask), you aren’t able to see NFTs at all. In the Zerion wallet, you’re able to see both NFTs, floor prices, transactions, etc... You can also see who holds specific NFT collections and then ‘watch’ their wallet to be notified when they make a new trade or buy another NFT.

Hard to find the best price across different DEXes and DEX aggregators
Trading on DEXes can be complicated: slippage, gas fees, approvals, finding the best route. Zerion wallet fetches the best price for you when you swap coins using the service 1inch.
When a user initiates a swap, Zerion first requests quotes from 1inch.
It asks for what amount of token B 1inch wants to buy a certain amount of token A and how much the user will pay for this swap. If there is enough allowance and balance, Zerion requests transaction data for the trade.
In addition to 1inch, Zerion checks data from other sources, including Zerion’s own open-source DeFi SDK, 0x, Hashflow, Wintermute, Paraswap, and DEXes. After that, Zerion offers the best rate to the user, which considers slippage, gas costs and previous approvals.
Multichain experiences often leave out protocols, assets, and chains
Multichain support for 10+ networks including Solana, Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Binance Smart Chain, Optimism, Gnosis Chain, and others.
How Zerion Started
Zerion was founded by a team of Ethereum OGs who have been writing smart contracts since 2016, and faced similar problems at the dawn of DeFi in 2018. They built a supercharged portfolio tracker to provide users with a true view of what was happening across chains, protocols, and dApps.
It’s worth bearing in mind that Zerion became what it currently is only in 2019. The vision to become the non-custodial “bank” of decentralized finance emerged after working for over four years in the space and realizing there were some serious technical and design challenges barring adoption.
Zerion’s pivot was also driven by personal experience. The team took a good look at the crypto space and concluded that most cryptocurrencies were either useless or not ready for adoption.
Using centralized exchanges started to feel a lot like traditional finance. It was sometimes impossible to open an account with certain exchanges under some nationalities.
Things were messy and unnecessarily complicated. DeFi promised to solve a lot of these issues, but people were yet to see any use case for fully managing one’s finances at the smart-contract level. So, that’s why Zerion decided to build one themselves.
Zerion Today And The Roadmap Going Forward
In May 2022, Zerion evolved into a web3 wallet where users can easily manage their DeFi and NFT portfolios across 10+ blockchains and Layer-2 networks including these features:
web App for tracking any wallet
mobile wallet for iOS and Android for signing any transaction on the go
browser extension wallet with portfolio tracking and history
Zerion is committed to building the best wallet for the most active and engaged web3 users by combining advanced blockchain data with an amazing user experience.
The way forward for Zerion is to add more networks, and support NFTs on several chains, not only $ETH and $SOL. Zerion also wants to make premium features for power users.
